Working at the intersections of art, science, and institutional architecture, Jason Knight’s practice is inherently collaborative, built on research partnerships that challenge dominant techno-scientific narratives. By engaging directly with laboratory spaces, clinical archives, and specialized experts, Knight investigates the ethical and political dimensions of speculative biology and technical control. This commitment to interdisciplinary dialogue reconfigures the boundaries between scientific protocol and creative production, turning the laboratory into a shared site for transgressive inquiry. Rather than merely illustrating scientific concepts, these collaborative frameworks dismantle rigid disciplinary silos to ignite critical discussion around biotechnology, autonomy, and contemporary institutional power.

Case Study: Teratological Prototypes

Teratological Prototypes (BIOTEKNICA In collaboration with TC&A - Tissue culture and Art Project) is an installation comprised of functional laboratory equipment, a free-standing tent, printed lasercut graphics, and a video work. All of the elements in this work support the growth of a single tissue culture sculpture: a Teratological Prototype.

The prototype consists of a P4HP bioabsorbable polymer scaffold sculpted in the form of a teratoma, 3D rapid prototyped as a mould, and seeded with mammalian cells that grow, live in the gallery environment. This work mobilises the notion of remixing the laboratory environment as a critical endeavour in an effort to create an interface between non-specialists and both the ‘real’ and mediated representations of the laboratory.
